How to study consciousness scienti®cally

چکیده

The neurosciences have advanced to the point that we can now treat consciousness as a scienti¢c problem like any other. The problem is to explain how brain processes cause consciousness and how consciousness is realized in the brain. Progress is impeded by a number of philosophical mistakes, and the aim of this paper is to remove nine of those mistakes: (i) consciousness cannot be de¢ned; (ii) consciousness is subjective but science is objective; (iii) brain processes cannot explain consciousness; (iv) the problem of `qualia' should be set aside; (v) consciousness is epiphenomenal; (vi) consciousness has no evolutionary function; (vii) a causal account of consciousness is necessarily dualistic; (viii) science is reductionistic, so a scienti¢c account of consciousness would show it reducible to something else; and (ix) an account of consciousness must be an information processing account.

Typical-case complexity and the SAT competitions

The aim of this paper is to gather insight into typical-case complexity of the Boolean Satis ability (SAT) problem by mining the data from the SAT competitions. Speci cally, the statistical properties of the SAT benchmarks and their impact on complexity are investigated, as well as connections between di erent metrics of complexity. While some of the investigated properties and relationships ar...

GaeaPN: A Petri Net Model for the Management of Data and Metadata Derivations in Scienti c Experiments

One important aspect of scienti c data management is metadata management. Metadata is broadly de ned as information about data (e.g., content, source, processing applied, precision). One kind of metadata which needs special attention is the data derivation information, i.e., how data are generated. In our application domain of geographical information systems (GIS) and global change research, w...

Consciousness and Common-sense Metaphors of Mind*

The science of the mind, and of consciousness in particular, needs to carefully consider people's common-sense views of the mind, not just what the mind really is. Such views are themselves an aspect of the nature of (conscious) mind, and therefore part of the object of study for a science of mind. Also, since the common-sense views allow broadly successful social interaction, it is reasonable ...
